Illness and Medical Matters

Is my child too ill for school?

Please refer to the NHS website pages below.

Absence from school

If your child is absent from school due to illness or for any other medical reasons, a message must be left with the school office on the first day of absence via the school absence line (answerphone) or by email to marianvian@mslt.org.uk. All infectious diseases must be notified to the school office.

When a child is absent due to vomiting and/or diarrhoea, please ensure that he/she is symptom-free for at least 48 hours as per Public Health Guidelines before returning to school.

If your child has an injury, such as a broken bone, please make sure that you contact the school office before bringing your child back into school so that the necessary precautions can be put in place for their safety.

Medication in school

If your child has an epipen or asthma pump please ensure that you speak to the school office to complete appropriate paperwork. It is your responsibility as the parent to ensure medication is in date and to dispose of medication after expiry.

If a child is recovering from a short term illness for which the doctor has prescribed a course of medication but is considered by the doctor to be fit enough for school before the course of treatment is complete, parents may come in to school at an agreed time to administer the medicine. In many cases, medicines prescribed by doctors are taken three times a day and, therefore, can be given before school, after school and at bedtime. School office staff can administer medicines in exceptional circumstances, or if your child needs a dose of prescribed medicines, such as antibiotics, during school hours. In such cases the school will require you to complete the form 'Parental Agreement for School to Administer Medicine' (see below) before any medication can be given to your child.

Our school policy on medicines is based on the Code of Practice established by the Local Authority and is designed to ensure the safety of all children.
